Words like discrimination, bigotry, dominance, subordination, heterosexism, racism or the use of Latino versus Hispanic, often cause negative reactions. When people speak these words, others begin to focus on what it means for them. It is easier to become defensive or simply ignore these interactions than it is to learn how the language of diversity affects others and impacts all our lives.

American English is saturated with “the language of oppression,” which is perpetuated by a lack of awareness and understanding of how language impacts our world. For any change to occur we must find a way to deal with the pain and discomfort caused by certain terms and concepts. This is no easy task. We all learned the terminology of oppression simultaneously with learning the English language, so we cannot unlearn it without making a conscious effort.

Available in print or electronically, the 4th edition of The Diversity Factor Language Guide is an aid in the unlearning process. While not definitive, it represents what we have learned about language and words, and how they affect our daily lives. The Diversity Factor Language Guide is very much a work-in-progress. We always welcome suggestions for improvement.
