The Diversity Factor: Capturing the Competitive Advantage of a Changing Workforce
Edited by Elsie Y. Cross and Margaret Blackburn White

Former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke’s 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial campaign set the stage for the Times-Picayune’s race project. The leading New Orleans newspaper appointed a project director and a team of reporters – black, white, veteran and rookie – to tackle the momentous subject of racial tension in New Orleans. They didn’t have to look very far. The team’s first meeting was “a study in dysfunction, a microcosm of American race relations.” The Times-Picayune discovered they needed to start their investigation in their own newsroom.
